- Be sure Communication Path is set to the path you will be using such as WIFI, GSM/Cellular, or both. This should match the monitoring plan you purchased.
- Enter the City ID we supplied (2 characters)
- Enter CS ID we supplied (2 characters)
- Enter Sub ID we supplied (4 characters)
Save and hit the back arrow once and select Reporter
- Select Primary CS Info
- Make sure the Communicator Type is set to the same path(s) above
- Enter Account Number which is the same 4 characters as the Sub ID above
Hit Save and hit the back arrow once then select Comm Diagnostics
- Select Setup Communication
- Select Register Device. This will begin local registration of your LynxTouch with AlarmNet.
- Hit the back arrow several times to exit Programming. Note: Always select YES if asked about reentry to Programming.

This clears all user codes, sensors, you name it – back to a brand new out of the box Lyric controller. Follow the steps below to default the panel so you can get registered again with AlarmNet but at a much lower affordable price with SafeHomeCentral.com. We can assist with reenrolling your wireless sensors remotely after we get you online with AlarmNet either via WIFI, cellular, or both.

Honeywell Lyric DIY Home Security and Automation System Review – 2021
The Lyric DIY Home Security and Automation System from Honeywell is their most advanced all-in-one wireless controller. Honeywell has long been known as the premier producer of security equipment in the United States. Therefore, it’s no surprise their Lyric security system is one of the most in demand systems for DIY home security in 2021.
Lyric contains a robust set of features for home security like a wireless connected platform instead of only a single fixed panel. It also features the SiX series two-way secure wireless technology, another great Honeywell innovation.
Much like Honeywell’s earlier wireless Lynx Touch models L5210 or L7000, the Lyric home security system’s user interface has been given a complete rework. It’s new 7” interface and capacitive glass front, give the system an appearance unlike any other Honeywell system. Similar to the 2GIG GC3 or Qolsys IQ Panel, Lyric has all the best features of their front-end UIs, along with simplicity of the LYNX Touch’s wireless sensor programming. Also, unlike traditional self-contained systems, Lyric is a beautiful addition to any wall protruding out only 1.3 inches. Hands-down Lyric is one of the best DIY home security system today.

Wireless Devices For Lyric
The Lyric system controller is backward compatible with the earlier Honeywell 5800-Series wireless sensors and detectors allowing upgrade customers to reuse existing devices on the new platform. Likewise, the new SiX-Series line of wireless devices are easy to install, easy to maintain and provide a higher level of security. This includes the Lyric secondary keypad (LKP500-EN), Lyric Keyfob (SiXFOB), Lyric Door Window Contact (SiXminiCT), Lyric Motion Sensor (SiXPIR), Lyric Glassbreak (SiXGB), Lyric Smoke Detector (SiXSMOKE), and Lyric Auxiliary Siren (SiXSIREN). The series utilize a 2.4 GHz 128-bit encryption signal to prevent possible jamming of the RF signals by sophisticated thieves which frankly is unlikely, but why not have the added protection?.
Honeywell has made Lyric as future-proof as possible. It has a USB port on its bottom, as well as slots on the side allowing an optional LTE cellular card addition or future cards which can be swapped out as new cellular standards are adopted. There’s another slot for housing additional wireless radios should ZigBee or some other protocol become popular in the connected world.
Lyric Home Automation
Unlike the Lynx Touch L5210 or L7000 wireless models, Lyric has both Z-Wave and WIFI built-in. This system is ready to connect to your local area network and integrate with Z-Wave lights, locks and thermostats. Older Lynx Touch systems required users to add the L5100-WIFI and the L5100-ZWAVE modules, which was a nice option but added complexity and made putting a system purchase together more difficult. Building WIFI and Z-Wave into the Lyric system from the start adds to the usability of this truly amazing piece of DIY-friendly security panel.
The Lyric Controller can receive voice commands to control Z-Wave automation smart scenes and other features with the use of it’s built-in microphone. There are three basic commands the Lyric alarm control panel will understand Hello Lyric, Hello Lyric home, and OK Lyric. Once the trigger word has been stated you can then follow with your automation smart scene name such as Returning Home, Wake-Up, Evening Time, or Bedtime. These scenes can include an array of Z-Wave connected devices to lock/unlock a door, lower a connected thermostat, turn on/off or dim lights, close or open your garage door.
The Honeywell Lyric Controller has also added integration with the Skybell HD Video Doorbell though you will need the DBCAM version to work with Total Connect 2. The high-definition video doorbell lets you enjoy new levels of security, control, and convenience wherever you are in the world. With Skybell you can remotely check doorbell activity on the Honeywell Total Connect 2.0 Remote Services app, and see, hear and speak to visitors at your door from a smartphone. When activating Honeywell’s Total Connect Remote Services used with the Lyric Controller, you can control the security system, compatible IP cameras including Skybell, Z-Wave or Lyric thermostats, Z-Wave lighting, Z-Wave locks and receive alerts from most smartphones, tablets, and computers. You can also download the My Home Controller app for local-only WIFI access when Total Connect 2 service for remote system control is not chosen.
For simple DIY installation of the Honeywell Lyric Controller we recommend considering the LCP500-DK which is a desk mount that requires no drilling and the LT-Cable which is an 8ft power cable. By using both of these products together the Lyric panel installation is fast and easy. Mounting the SiX wireless sensors is already DIY simple!
A Potential Lyric Issue
While we see the Honeywell Lyric LCP500-L Security Controller as a hit with great features, there is a glaring negative we see as well. If you signup for AlarmNet for Interactive Services and possibly Total Connect 2, you are sort of “locked” to your selected dealer for monitoring services. You can still change dealers at any time of course but it will require a factory reset (defaulting the panel) which blows away all existing panel settings and zone configuration. Honeywell has decided, and just for Lyric it seems, to make dealer “takeovers” of monitoring accounts very difficult since they now require the new dealer or DIY homeowner to reenter/reprogram all wireless sensors and more into the controller from scratch. If you start with a good monitoring vendor this will never be a problem but we have an issue making it so burdensome for users to switch if their dealer service levels fall or their pricing is no longer competitive.This seems to be an invisible “feature” for many who have researched the Lyric alarm system for their home or business. We felt it necessary for potential buyers to be aware of this unfortunate Honeywell AlarmNet decision when considering a purchase.
Our View of the Honeywell Lyric Security System
Regardless of the previous negative we still wholly endorce the Honeywell Lyric security system for DIY home alarm use. We have had very few hardware failures which is consistent with Honeywell and previously Ademco products. It’s a solid choice for 2021 upgrade or new installations.

Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus DIY Wireless Home Security System Review – 2021
From the professional installation side of our business the new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is with a doubt our “go-to” panel when upgrading customers with lots of existing wireless devices. We frequently come across customers with older Honeywell Lynx Plus or Lynx Touch wireless panels, or even Vista hardwired with wireless sensors added on that are looking to modernize. The same goes for customers with Interlogix/GE Simon XT, 2GIG Go!Control (GC2), or DSC Impassa systems, all very popular in their day.
Qolsys has introduced an enhancement to their already successful IQ Panel 2 adding PowerG wireless capability but more importantly compatibility with many popular legacy wireless formats. The new product is called the IQ Panel 2 Plus. While we loved their original IQ Panel 2, the new Plus model adds some powerful upgrade features. First is adding DSC’s PowerG wireless capability for super long range sensor protection. Now that DSC (or more correctly Johnson Controls) has acquired Qolsys adding PowerG to the Qolsys lineup was a natural. Rather than the normal 100-200 feet range most RF wireless sensors can be seperated from their control panel without a repeater, PowerG has a maximum range of 2000 feet! This is perfect for homeowners with detached garages, sheds, thick interior stone walls etc. where traditionally wireless without a repeater was problematic. Of course security was designed in so these sensors utilize 128-bit AES excryption making PowerG one of the most secure in the industry.
Another improvement for the IQ Panel is legacy RF wireless support. If you had an existing GE/Interlogix panel for example the IQ Panel 2 Plus can continue to utilize these 319.5Mhz wireless sensors – as well as 915Mhz PowerG sensors. If you had 2GIG or Honeywell 5800 series wireless sensors then you can use the 345Mhz legacy wireless model. The same goes with DSC 433Mhz wireless support. The choice of legacy wireless support make the IQ Panel 2 Plus extremely flexible for panel upgrades. You can add up to 128 wireless total zones supporting PowerG or one of the legacy wireless modes (319.5Mhz, 345Mhz, 433Mhz).
Out of the box the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus has WIFI and 4G LTE cellular buillt-in. You can choose between AT&T or Verizon models. As with the earlier Qolsys panels Alarm.com is their chosen interactive services partner to remote control security, home automation, as well as video surveillance devices such as cameras and video doorbells. Using the built-in Live View capability you can answer your door right from the 7″ touchscreen using an Alarm.com Skybell video doorbell. Have a Z-Wave lock? Then you can unlock the door from the keypad as well. Of course all of this is possible from the Alarm.com mobile app too.
For home automation the IQ2+ is Z-Wave Plus compatible which opens up the world to the thousands of Z-Wave devices on the market. You can ad up to 232 Z-Wave home automation devices such as lights, locks, thermostats, even Z-Wave sirens. You can control these devices right from your keypad or via the Alarm.com app assuming you sign up for the Interactive-Enhanced plan which adds home automation control.
From a panel configuration/programming point of view the Qolsys IQ2+ has the most straightforward navigation. Definitely the easiest for DIY homeowners. Of course SafeHomeCentral offers free remote programming as well but Qolsys has always been the quickest and easiest to setup. The panel can be mounted on a wall or you can use the included “kickstand” allowing you to just place the keypad on your kitchen countertop or desk and plug the panel into a nearby AC outlet. The panel has a 24hour backup battery included.
The classic IQ Panel 2 could use Alarm.com Image Sensors which are motion detectors with a built-in camera which can take several snaps when an alarm is triggered at the motion detector. However the PowerG daughter card uses the same slot as the optional Image Sensor daughter card in the IQ Panel 2 Plus. But DSC offers a PowerG Image Sensor that works with Alarm.com so all is not lost! And speaking of cameras the Qolsys IQ2+ has a built-in 5MP camera on the keypad which can take pictures upon disarming or during an alarm. There is also a software driven motion sensor that can use the keypad camera to detect pixel changes (movement) when either armed or disarmed. The latter is useful for presense detection for older users so love-one can check to make sure they are up and about. There is also a software driven Glassbreak Detector as well which utilizes the microphone in the keypad as part of the two-way voice feature. This is used to talk with a central station dispatcher directly via the keypad since the keypad has both a speaker and microphone.
Because legacy wireless devices can be used, depending on which model you purchase, there are hundreds of potential security devices that can be used with the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus. This includes wireless security sensors from Qolsys (319.5Mhz), GE/Interlogix (319.5Mhz), DSC (433Mhz), DSC PowerG (915Mhz), Honeywell 5800 (345Mhz) or 2GIG (345Mhz).
Qolsys also sells the IQ Remote which is a WIFI connected 7″ secondary touchscreen. You can add up to three IQ Remote keypads to your system giving four total keypads when including the actual IQ Panel 2 Plus. They look just like the main panel, also have an integrated camera on the front and will chime/talk as zones open (when chime mode active). Frankly we find them pricey but they are the best looking remote keypads out there. Just need to supply power to the included AC transformer. Can be wall mounted or use the included kickstand just like the IQ2+ main panel. Oh and also has its own rechargable backup battery inside.
Overall the new Qolsys IQ Panel 2 Plus is a great panel. If not upgrading from an existing wireless panel you can order the Qolsys 319.5Mhz model since it comes in kit form with two encrypted wireless door/window sensors and an encrypted wireless motion sensor. While the panel in the kit includes the PowerG daughter card the sensors with the kit are not PowerG transmitters rather they are Qolsys S-Line 319.5Mhz sensors. Just add on any addition al sensors you need and you have one advanced, but easy to install professional grade alarm system!

Hooking Up My Honeywell Dual-Path LTE-iA or LTE-iV Communicator

Hooking up your new Honeywell dual-path Ethernet and 4G LTE communicator to your Honeywell Vista (or Honeywell equivelent such as ADT SafeWatch Pro or First Alert) is actually pretty simple. Its just four wires to connect.
Always power down your alarm panel before making any connections. Unplug the AC transformer from the nearby 110VAC outlet and remove either the RED or BLACK wire from the backup battery in the bottom of the metal control panel box. Only one wire is required to be removed. You can confirm power has been removed by checking that your keypad is dark (off).
Dual-Path Models (LTE-iA or LTE-iV)
Step 1 is mounting the communicator. Generally mounting the plastic box next to the metal control panel enclosure is the easiest. Do NOT place the communicator inside the metal box if you want cellular reception!

Use the included transformer and backup battery to power the communicator since this unit draws a LOT of power!

In order for us to pull your Zone List from your panel and tweak the configuration for Total Connect 2 service please follow these simple steps. This applies to Honeywell residential P series panels such as the Vista-20P only.
- Enter Program Mode: [Installer Code] 800. You will see “20” displayed on the keypad if successful. The default Installer Code is 4112. Hooking Up My Honeywell LTEM-XA or LTEM-XV Communicator

Hooking up your new Honeywell 4G LTE communicator to your Honeywell Vista (or Honeywell equivelent such as ADT SafeWatch Pro or First Alert) is actually pretty simple. Its just four wires to connect.
Always power down your alarm panel before making any connections. Unplug the AC transformer from the nearby 110VAC outlet and remove either the RED or BLACK wire from the backup battery in the bottom of the metal control panel box. Only one wire is required to be removed. You can confirm power has been removed by checking that your keypad is dark (off).
Cellular Only Models (LTEM-XA or LTEM-XV)
Step 1 is mounting the communicator. The preferred method is tou use the included threaded conduit mount where you attach the communicator to the top of your Vista control panel’s metal box. There are knockout along the top of the metal box that can be broken open just using a screwdriver and bending/snapping off the metal tab. Attach the threaded connector to your communicator (in the box with the communicator) and use the included nut on the inside to secure the communicator to the top of your panel.
Take the 4 wire wiring hardness (ECP Cable) and plug into the lower left socket on the communicator as shown in the diagram and slide the four wires through the threaded connector into the metal box for wiring to the panel.

The other method is to mount the communicator a few inches away from the control panel box and feed the wiring hardness (ECP Cable) into an existing opening or use one of the unused knockout located on all four sides of the box. Plug the harness into the lower left socket on the communicator as shown in the diagram above.

Standard Honeywell Residential Vista P Series security panel include the Vista-10P, Vista-15P, Vista-20P, Vista-21iP, and the SafeWatch Pro 3000. Older panels such as the Vista-20SE etc. wire pretty much the same but have no capability for Total Connect 2 interactive services (remote control). Be sure to check the wiring diagram shown on the control panel’s inside door for your panel model and keypad wiring terminals.

Communicator Power Up
Power up your Vista panal and the LTE communicator by plugging in the AC transformer and attaching the backup battery. There are four LEDs in a column on the left side of the circuit board. The bottom Green LED MUST be lit which indicated satisfactory signal strength with the cellular carrier. If not lit you will need to relocate the communicator to a better location. If in a basement try moving to an outside wall and as high in the room as possible. In weak reception areas you may need to mount the communicator on ground level or higher (attic) and run wires back to the panel.

During initial power up the top three LEDs (Green, Yellow, Red) will sequesnce from top to bottom while it is setting up registration with the carrier. This sequence can take up to 15 minutes during the first power up. Normal power up initialization after this first time generally only takes 60-90 seconds.
Don’t power down the communicator during this first-time initialization process.
Once the LED sequencing completes the communicator is ready for service!
In order for us to pull your Zone List from your panel and tweak the panel’s configuration for Total Connect 2 service please follow these simple steps. This applies to Honeywell residential P series panels such as the Vista-20P.
- Enter Program Mode: [Installer Code] 800. You will see “20” displayed on the keypad if successful. The default Installer Code is 4112. If your Installer Code is unknown then just power down the panel (unplug transformer and battery) and then power back up. 2GIG GC3 Firmware Update Files
The new 4G LTE cellular communicator needed for Alarm.com service requires a firmware version of at least 3.1.3 or higher to recognize the cell module. You can update the GC3 firmware yourself without incurring an Over-The-Air (OTA) cellular charge from Alarm.com.NOTE: If your current firmware is below 3.0.2 be sure to update to 3.0.2 first then update direct to the latest firmware.
Updating My 2GIG GC3 Firmware- Download and unzip the firmware update file. (After unzipping right-click on the file name, and select ‘Save As’ and save it to an empty USB thumb drive, leaving the file name unchanged.)
- Save the firmware file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. Note: The USB flash drive must have only one partition. Be sure to eject flash drive properly from your computer!
- Plug the USB flash drive into the USB port on the top of the GC3 panel.
- You will see a notice that there is a new firmware to install. Select Update
- Enter the Installer Code or Master Code.
- The GC3/GC3e will install the update and restart (reboot)
Note: This update file below will upgrade all GC3 or GC3e panel firmware to 3.2.5. Be sure to start at version 3.0.2 or higher otherwise update to 3.0.2 first.
If you have previously upgraded the GC3/GC3e to a 3.2.5 firmware, you will receive an error as you are already at the latest firmware.

Home Security System Alarm Monitoring Basics
Your home is your castle as they say. It’s where you go to escape and find peace in a world full of madness. For this reason, it’s imperative that you create an environment that is safe for the sake of you and your family. A burglary is something that can greatly diminish the amount of comfort you feel in your home. It is one of the most traumatizing violations you can experience, both emotionally and physically.While it’s true that you can recover some physical things after a home robbery, it’s not so easy picking up the pieces emotionally after you’ve been violated in such a manner. Implementing a monitored home security system can give you and your family just the peace of mind you need to feel safe in your home. Not to mention homes with security systems are 4X less likely to be broken into.
But is alarm monitoring really necessary?
The simple answer is YES! If you are going to invest (or already have) in a DIY home security solution, it makes sense for a professional to monitor it. If you skip this step, many intruders will simply not care that an alarm is sounding, as they know they have a reasonable amount of time before a neighbor gets around to calling the police. And what if a fire alarm goes off? Well, your property will already be severely damaged before anyone notices from the outside.
Alarm Monitoring – How it Works
Alarm monitoring is the rapid, detailed communication between your home alarm system and a security provider’s central station. Your alarm control panel registers an emergency event and sends a signal to the central monitoring station, where the appropriate authorities are notified and sent to your home. The technical specifics may differ slightly for each alarm system brand, but the basics of alarm monitoring is similar in any home security system.
Your system’s control panel is the center of a network of sensors, which may include window or door sensors, motion detectors, glassbreak sensors, smoke or heat detectors, or specialized temperature or flood sensors.
The first signal sent by your control panel will alert monitoring personnel at the central station, who will call to notify you and confirm whether it’s a real emergency, or a false alarm. If you don’t respond, the monitoring service contacts the proper local agency to dispatch emergency personnel to your address. Some security systems offer additional features, such as immediate alarms which don’t depend upon a confirmation call (keypad fire alarm for example) or silent alarms that don’t alert intruders and give them a chance to disable the system before the follow-up signal is sent.Information sent by your home security system to the alarm monitoring center includes account identification to access your address and contact information, and the type of sensor that has been triggered. Location of triggered device is generally in their database.
For example, a smoke detector event will cause the alarm monitoring service to contact your fire department and tell them there is smoke detected in the basement of your home, while the signal from a medical alert pendant would be routed to local ambulance or paramedic services along with special instructions on how to gain entrance to the home.
Verification of Alarm
In most situations a phone call will be made to your home where the alarm was activated. If there is no answer or correct password then the proper authorities will be dispatched and your emergency contacts will be notified.
Some exceptions to this process would be buttons that are manually pressed: fire, medical or police buttons depressed directly on the panel, a medical pendant or watch being pressed, or the key fob panic button. These buttons, when held down for 1 to 3 seconds signal an emergency and dispatch of the proper authorities is automatic without a verification call.
A special duress / panic code can be used as well. A duress code is a separate keypad passcode used in a hopefully rare situation where you are forced to disarm the system by an aggressor. You enter your duress passcode and the system will appear to disarm as normal. This code however alerts the monitoring station of a hostage type situation and authorities are dispatched accordingly without a verification call to your home. No sirens would be used as police race to your location.
Alarm Monitoring Communication Options
In the event a sensor detects an intruder, fire, or environmental issue, the signal is sent to your alarm panel and then transmitted to the central station. How it gets there can take one or more paths to the monitoring facility.
There is traditional phone line communication which works like a fax machine. The alarm takes over the phone line and calls the monitoring station, transmitting the alarm signals which are translated into alarm events for a dispatch operator to respond. When installed correctly (with an RJ31X jack) the land line is taken over even if someone is talking on the phone or is off hook. Land lines can be cut by an intruder before even entering your home however, preventing transmission of signals from the panel to the monitoring center. As well land lines are susceptible to weather outages due to down telephone poles for instance.
Voice over IP (VoIP) and broadband Internet communication are options, but they are not considered reliable paths by themselves like land lines. They can also be cut by a burglar and more importantly they highly vulnerable to power outage. Most people do not have backup power for their home networking equipment such as a modem and/or router. If power goes out so may your Internet connection. Has this already happened to you during a storm?Land line communication is quickly being replaced by cellular communication. With either a cellular connection or preferably cellular back-up that is accessed only after land line or Internet failure, your alarm will have its own connection that is activated like a standard cell phone call and signals are transmitted to the monitoring station via wireless connection. An intruder can not cut a wire outside preventing central station communication and ultimately rapid police response.
Having a backup communication path in the event a line is cut or a power failure interrupts one of the paths is strongly recommended. In the commercial world it’s a must. For proper home security monitoring we recommend either landline with cellular backup, or baseband Internet with cellular backup.
Not All Alarm Central Stations Are the Same
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a leader in certifying and inspecting central station standards and performance capabilities. UL has rigid standards and only a select percentage of monitoring facilities qualify for their listing. Annual inspections of listed central stations by UL are made to ensure continued compliance.Certified central stations must be able to withstand physical attack, operate on back-up power sources in the event of power loss, and meet a whole variety of other security and operational standards. You can generally expect higher levels of home security and better service from UL listed central stations. That’s because they are required to meet or exceed certain levels of performance.
Local Alarms and Self-Monitoring Options
Do-It-Yourself (DIY) systems are popping up all over. Many of these systems offer no monthly monitoring commitment as a key selling point instead of $40+ a month for three years or more with companies like ADT or Comcast. If you are a DIY type of person, this might be for you.
The common concern with no alarm monitoring at all (local alarm) is that you are the person in control of emergency situations. For example, many people get an alarm system due to a recent break in or crime activity in the neighborhood. A non-monitored system will alert you to an intruder, only when you are home. From that point it is your job to decide whether to call the police or protect your children first.
Unmonitored “local” alarms can still provide benefit, though limited. There is no monthly expense to deal with especially for multiple years with the big guys. If you’re home, the alarm noise lets you know there’s a problem and allows you to take necessary action. The noise may even frighten off some less-determined intruders. Many emergencies however are too serious to deal with by yourself, especially if you’re disabled or otherwise incapacitated. Self-monitoring is an option which is less expensive than standard central station monitoring. In this scenario you receive a text and/or email from the monitoring company’s equipment directly and “you” decide if the alarm needs attention. There are no dispatch operators in the loop at all. You are responsible for calling the police or fire department. The problem is what if that text message comes to your phone while you are sleeping, on vacation, or in a meeting at work? Generally, only online security providers will offer self-monitoring as an option.
The reality is people install home security systems because they want their local authorities alerted when something critical happens. When your house is burning down, a text message might not do the trick. Professional monitoring allows you to save your family, which includes pets, knowing that the proper authorities are on their way. That extra layer of protection for you means your family, your house, your keepsakes, and maybe even your neighbors are safer.
The Modern Connected Home
We all have smartphones. Why not use them to control your home security and automation devices too? This is at the top of the wish list for most DIY homeowners.Interactive remote monitoring is a service separate from central station dispatch. Its an add-on capability that allows you to:
- Arm and disarm your security system from your smartphone, tablet, or computer
- Control Z-Wave lights, locks, thermostats in your home
- View what’s happening inside/outside your home with streaming video or snapshots
- Be notified by call, text, and/or email if there is a break-in, fire, medical emergency, or environmental issue (freeze/flood) in your home
You can usually get interactive service from traditional UL central station monitoring dealers as well as discount self-monitoring providers. One point however. Interactive services do not work with landline-only connection to a central station. Broadband Internet or cellular would be required.
Other Things to Consider
By this point, you understand the basics of home security alarm monitoring. But there are some other key things you should keep in mind when choosing monitoring options. Some things you may have already discovered through previous research. But others you may be surprised to learn about with regards to alarm monitoring.- Lower Insurance Premiums – Did you know you can usually get a discount on your home insurance, if you install an alarm system with central station monitoring? Installing home security can decrease your insurance premiums by up to 20 percent annually. This is a cost that is usually rolled into your mortgage. You should check in with your insurance agent to ensure this adjustment is added, as soon as you include alarm monitoring with your home security system. Self-monitored and/or local alarms usually have no premium discount (or very little) because the insurance company’s risk of loss is much greater without true central station monitoring.
- Contract Terms – Oftentimes, people think all they do is purchase alarm monitoring for their existing system (or new alarm system) and that’s the end. But usually there are other costs involved that the homebuyer isn’t necessarily made aware of upfront. When shopping around, ask if there is a contract, and for how long the contract is for. Most local dealers use 36 months agreements. You also need to know how much money you’ll have to pay if you break/terminate your contract early. Some alarm companies charge hundreds of dollars for breaking the contract, so it’s imperative you know that information upfront.
- Relocation Fees – If you have had your alarm system professionally installed and monitored, and you decide to move, the company used may charge a relocation fee. A company like Vivint or ADT have policies that they will move your system for free, if you commit to signing another 42-month contract. If you opt out of the contract, you’ll be charged $100 for the moving fee. Each company has their own policy, so research thoroughly before committing.

A home invasion, or fire, is very scary, and people often wonder was there anything they could have done to prevent it. While you don’t want to ever live your life in fear, there is nothing wrong with being proactive. Your best line of defense is a quality alarm system with monitoring. How to Trigger a Cellular Communication Test From Your Alarm Panel
In order to complete an activation of an Alarm.com cellular communicator a cell test must be initiated by the homeowner. In almost all cases just the Master Code is needed but some panels such as the Qolsys IQ Panel 2 requires the Installer Code to reach the correct menu to trigger the manual communication test. While Its not a bad idea to trigger a manual test on occasion, Alarm.com will be looking for a successful communication test daily from their communicator (programmed automatically).

Do Fake Security Cameras Really Work?
Some people have funny ideas about home security.
Certain homeowners, for example, boast about preventing burglaries with nothing more than a large Beware of the Doberman sign. Others park a pair of muddy size 14 boots outside the front door as a crime deterrent. Some will tell you to entrust your security to a fake security cameras – an empty camera body designed to mimic a video monitoring solution.When a burglar spots your dummy camera – complete with blinking, battery-powered red light if you spring for the high-end $20 model – they’ll quickly beat a retreat…or so the story goes.
But does it work?
It’s a home security urban legend with a grain of truth. A novice burglar might be fooled (maybe), although experienced crooks can quickly spot a fake.

Comparing Alarm Interactive Services Apps: Alarm.com, Total Connect 2, SecureNet, Alula, Telguard
Interactive Services is the component that adds remote control capability to a home security and automation platform. The days of just remotely arming and disarming your alarm system from a smartphone have given way to controlling lights, locks, and thermostats as well. And don’t forget about video whether a video doorbell or interior or exterior cameras. Everything can now easily be controlled by a single app from essentially anywhere you have cell service or WIFI coverage.
The Interactive Services company chosen must match with the cellular or Internet communicator installed in your alarm panel. For example, if you have a SecureNet cell card you must use SecureNet’s interactive service. If using an Alarm.com cell card (whether built-in to the panel of external) it can only talk to Alarm.com’s data centers.
Interactive services which gives end-users the ability to remote control functions of their security and home automation from their panel must attach to the backend servers by cellular, Internet, or both for redundancy. Landline connectivity direct to a central station does not have the ability to control your system.
Honeywell Total Connect 2
Honeywell security systems traditionally use AlarmNet (owned by Honeywell) for interactive services. Total Connect 2 is the interactive services app that controls a compatible Honeywell residential or commercial panel from a smartphone, tablet, or computer. This includes the Vista series hardwired alarm controls as well as wireless Lynx Plus, Lynx Touch, and Lyric systems. ADT SafeWatch Pro 3000 panels are just Honeywell Vista-20P with special firmware loaded and can easily be converted to a generic Honeywell panel with a pop-in PROM change on the motherboard (kits available).
AlarmNet has been around the longest because Honeywell has been the leader in the residential and commercial security arena for almost 50 years and was first to market. Their latest generation app (TC2) is very simple to use, easy to understand, and works on both iOS and Android phones/tablets and any PC with a browser. There are tabs setup for the different alarm monitoring plans purchased. For example, if you sign-up for “Smart Security” only the Security tab will work, if using “Smart Home” then there also is an Automation tab for controlling lights, locks, and thermostats. Add video and the Video Doorbell and Camera tabs appear.
Alarm.com
Alarm.com is a newer interactive services company on the market but already 17 years old now and arguably the best app for remote control of compatible alarm systems. ADC does not actually make hardware though does market communicators and other accessories specifically for use with their data centers. They have partnered with multiple alarm manufacturers such as Qolsys, 2GIG, and Interlogix to provide superior interactive capabilities to their panels well above what was already on the market. Qolsys for example uses cell modules embedded on their motherboard and went all-in with Alarm.com whereas 2GIG, which uses a plugin cell communicator strategy, can use cell cards from Alarm.com, Telguard, or SecureNet.
What has set the Alarm.com service apart is the number of included features when compared to their competitors. Daily supervision of the connection to Alarm.com is standard with options for 6-hour and hourly check-in, activity monitoring of sensors even when the alarm system is not armed, Crash and Smash protection is included for capable systems (sends a signal before a wireless control panel can be ripped off the wall and smashed), and Image Capture on Alarm. This last feature applies to Alarm.com Image Sensors which combines an interior PIR motion detector with a high-quality video camera enabling snapshots to be sent to the app when the motion detector goes into alarm.
Telguard
Telguard’s focus in the residential security market is has been “telephone-capture” cell communicators. These devices connect to the landline connection on hardwired panels and essentially trick the alarm panel into thinking it still has an active landline for dialing out to the central station. These capture devices such as their popular TG1 Express are universal in nature and work with any alarm hardwired alarm system with dial-out capability.
Telguard introduced their Flex Interactive Services to augment their cellular connectivity so end-users could remotely arm and disarm their security system as well. While the TG1 is a great universal cellular communicator getting end-users migrated off expensive landlines and over to cellular which will save money while reducing risk, it is not a very good interactive services device because not all control panels can easily be setup for remote control. Keyswitch arming or at least a way to configure a zone and output trigger to arm and disarm is needed. The TG1 Express models are not very DIY friendly when interactive services is needed and better suited for a dealer to setup locally.
Alula
When two well known names in the security industry merged in early 2018, ipDatatel and Resolution Products, Alula emerged on the scene. ipDatatel already had a solid interactive services platform that serviced their popular product line of cell and Internet communicators. When the name changed to Alula so did their app though it also came with some cleaning up. It can certainly remotely arm and disarm compatible security systems, control Z-Wave home automation devices, and integrate Alula video cameras but its frankly still “basic” in its overall feature list when compared to Alarm.com or Total Connect 2. Because Alula (ipDatatel) makes so many communicators their Interactive Services platform is compatible with many different alarm system brands and models.
SecureNet
SecureNet Technologies is a small Florida based interactive services service formed in 2003. They have a good all-purpose app (SmartLink+) for controlling various alarm panels using a SecureNet compatible cell card. In some cases they are the only available remote control service (example the 2GIG Rely) but in other cases such as Resolution’s Helix and DSC’s iOtega they have lost ground and not the only available interactive services choice. Their customer support is excellent, and the app is clear and easy to use, albeit somewhat basic in functionality. They do not have the range of compatible video cameras and video doorbells as some of their competitors such as TC2 or ADC.

2GIG Rely DIY Wireless Home Security System Review – 2019
The 2GIG Rely wireless alarm kit is fast becoming our top seller for condos, apartments, townhouses, or frankly any home that only needs a maximum of 16 wireless devices or zones. The Rely is a professional grade home security system designed to be fast and easy to setup, like under an hour! The system is an all-in-one type of wireless alarm where the keypad, siren, wireless receiver, cellular radio, and brains is packed into one compact, yet attractive housing. If installed in a rental unit it can be packed up and moved to your new location rather than leaving behind.
The key advantage of this kit which includes the Rely main control/keypad, three wireless door/window sensors, wireless motion sensor, and even a wireless keyfob is price – just $199.95. Because it’s made by 2GIG which has grown to be a real player in the home security market is that all their various wireless sensors will work with Rely making expansion and customization easy. What’s more Honeywell’s 5800 series wireless units also are compatible with Rely which means there is a WIDE range of sensors to choose from like smoke detectors, Carbon Monoxide detectors, various models of motion sensors, various models of glassbreak sensors, a slew of wireless door and window sensors, panic buttons, you name it.
The 2GIG Rely is geared for small homes where expansion beyond 16 wireless sensors is not required. This keeps the kit price point low. But even at just under $200 it includes an ATT cellular communicator which is hard to find in any prepackaged security kit below $300. The key advantage of cellular central station alarm monitoring is there is no risk of line tampering outside the home or apartment and of course no expensive landline required.
The cellular communicator works with SecureNet for remote interactive services which is another top player in the security market. The SecureNet SmartLink app allows users to remotely arm and disarm their Rely control, check on status, and view SecureNet cameras if connected to the system. We’ve used SmartLink for a lot of years now and it works well with many other systems we sell such as the DSC iOtega or Alula Connect+/Helix.The only real negatives with Rely is it can not be expanded beyond 16 zones, but that was by design since its targeted for small homes. Also, there is no built-in home automation (Z-Wave) capability with Rely. There is a workaround however if you use Amazon’s Alexa or Google Home which both integrates with SmartLink.
One other point to mention is the wireless sensors are not encrypted. While this is not a major disadvantage unless you have museum quality artwork at home, it is a point to consider. Newer systems such as the Honeywell Lyric or DSC iOtega offer fully encrypted sensors but expect these kits even without a cellular communicator to cost double. I still have Honeywell 5800 series wireless transmitters (which can work with Rely) in my own home and have no plan to upgrade these sensors.There are two options for setting up your 2GIG Rely system. The first is using the SecureNet SmartLink app. SafeHomeCentral would give you an activation code that you just enter under the “Setup New System” link in SmartLink. The other option is to have SafeHomeCentral remote program the entire system for you once the kit arrives. We just talk with you over the phone and ask where you are placing each sensor, what its serial number is, and what the description should be for display on the keypad such as “Front Door”.
The Rely system/keypad itself can mount on the wall but also includes a desk stand which means no routing of the AC power cord within the wall which is the only wired component in the entire system. Most customers just sit the Rely keypad on a kitchen countertop or desk using its stand plugging into the nearest AC wall outlet. There is a built-in rechargeable backup battery that keeps the system up and running for 8 hours in the event of a power outage. Once the power comes back on the backup battery will trickle charge back up. 2GIG recommends replacing the backup battery every 5-6 years.The batteries in the wireless sensors are Lithium and designed to last about five years before requiring replacement which are readily available online and even Walmart.
We were able to mount each of the door/window sensors easily using the provided self-stick tape. In general, I like using screws but if this is a rental property for example then by all means use the tape which holds tight. For doors just mount the transmitter on the wood trim and matching magnet on the door. There is a notch on the side of the transmitter showing how to align the magnet which must be spaced no father than ¾” when the door is closed.
The motion detector did not come with two-sided tape, so I used the two supplied screws to mount it at a height of 7’ in a corner of the room. If you don’t want to put any holes in the wall just buy a small amount of two-sided tape at CVS or Walmart. The motion detector is very light, so it will stick to the wall OK. Just be careful not to pull off any paint from the wall if removing later.The included keyfob fits right on your keychain and looks like a car alarm remote. It has four buttons: Arm Away, Arm Stay, Disarm, and Panic. The range was just perfect when testing. Could be at the curb to disarm or trigger a panic alarm if needed. Of course you can also arm and disarm the system from the SmartLink app loaded on your cell phone too. This is handy when at the office and wondering did you really set the alarm when rushing out that morning. Just open the app, check status, and take appropriate action such as Arm Away.
If you live in a small home and looking to install a professional grade security system yourself on a budget, then the 2GIG Rely is one to consider. Its simple to install and certainly fast and hard to beat the price for a real alarm system with cellular connectivity to a central station!

There are two codes all DIY homeowners should know related to their security system, the Installer Code, and Master Code. The Installer Code (also called Program Code or Dealer Code depending on brand) is a special code used to access system configuration settings so a user can add sensors/zones, change delay times, modify central station telephone numbers and account numbers.[gap height=”15px”]
The Master code on the other hand accesses a different menu where the homeowner can add, delete, edit user codes, WIFI settings, view the system event log. The Master Code can also arm and disarm the system. The Installer Code can also arm/disarm the system with some important limitations. If the Master Code (or any user code other than Installer Code) is used to arm the system then the Installer Code can NOT disarm the system. This is a security feature built in to most systems.[gap height=”15px”]
User Codes are configured using the Master Code. These codes can arm and disarm the system and bypass zones. Some families have a specific User Code per family member while others all just share a single User Code (usually the Master Code). Definitely user preference![gap height=”15px”]
Each brand of security system has a default Installer Code and Master Code when setting up fresh. When the Installer Code is not known for an existing installation we recommend trying the default Installer Code first since many dealers do not change this code (despite knowing they should). Some brands such as Honeywell have a backdoor procedure for changing the Installer Code when the existing Installer Code is not known. Other systems must be Factory Reset which erases all existing zone configuration and returns the Installer and Master Codes back to default. This is generally a last resort since the entire system must be reprogrammed from scratch. Some systems however can not be reset if the last dealer “locked” the panel meaning no local access, only remote access by the dealer. We never lock a system but there are many dealers who do since they are afraid of alarm monitoring “takeover”. DSC iOtega DIY Home Security and Automation Review – 2019
DSC, a long-time player in the home and commercial security industry has released there newest wireless offering, iOtega. Out on the market since early 2018 it is targeted for quick and easy wireless installation for professional security dealers. That does not mean however its not a great home alarm system for DIY homeowners. I’ll give you a quick rundown on our company’s impressions, as well as our DIY customer’s feedback on this exciting new DIY wireless home security system entry.
Wireless, Secure, Fast and Easy Install
iOtega features DSC’s industry-leading PowerG wireless technology providing a fully encrypted security system with end-to-end 128-bit AES encrypted bidirectional transmitters and includes in-demand user features such as a built-in siren, 2-way voice, and sleek appearance that blends in almost anywhere. Beauty by design, Iotega includes a capacitive touch keypad as well as an optional 7” Wifi enabled touchscreen, wireless arming station and software app powered by SecureNet a leading Interactive Services provider.Wide Range Of Secure Wireless Protection Devices
Installation is relatively simple, just place and stick the wide range of wireless PowerG protection sensor/transmitters. These include door and window sensors available in both white and brown, pet immune motion detectors, glassbreak detectors, smoke and heat detectors, outdoor motion detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, shock detectors, flood detectors, keyfobs, and secondary wireless keypads. Basically everything we need to use when we do our own professional installations here in Philadelphia and will be the same for DIY homeowners.
On the positive side, both WIFI and Z-Wave home automation capability is built-in to all iOtega models. iOtega is also the first system we know of that also is Z-Wave Plus capable. Being able to control lights, locks, thermostats, etc. in the home locally, and of course from anywhere when using SecureNet interactive services is one of the reasons to consider iOtega. I’ll also note that there is also an Ethernet jack on the back of the unit to connect to a switch or router too. Few systems now a days include a wired Internet jack. You may not need it but its there anyway.
We like the look of the black cube when sitting on an end table, night stand, or kitchen countertop. The touchscreen keypad is hidden until your hand comes close to the cube and lights up. Very cool. If you need additional keypads placed around the home they are available when you want to go traditional but since with interactive services any smartphone can easily control the iOtega securely as well. If you are in bed and wondering did you remember to arm the security system, just grab your cell phone and check, and activate if necessary. The same goes if at the office and wondering the same thing.
And of course with Z-Wave home automation you can adjust the temperature of your home when starting your return drive from work. There are som many Z-Wave compatable thermostats, light switches and modules, locks, blinds on the market sold at the big box stores such as Home Depot, Lowes, Best Buy, as well as many, many online dealers such as us.Interactive Services With iOtega
Interactive Services is the piece in between your hardware and the central station. In the iOtega’s case DSC has chosen SecureNet to provide remote access to your system’s security and home automation (and also video) functions. SecureNet receives the Internet and/or cellular communications and relays this to your smartphone app, as well as the central station in the case of alarm conditions. Their smartphone app is available for both iOS and Android and is accessable from laptops/PCs as well for truly convenient access to the iOtega system, from anywhere in the world securely.Our Concerns with IOtega
The only real negative with the iOtega panel itself is the lack of local programming from the integrated touchscreen keypad. Rather DSC decided to rely on the SecureNet dealer portal to handle all programming entry. While this is not really a problem for dealers with their installations it could be for DIY homeowners. To combat this issue some online dealers such as SafeHomeCentral provide free programming and configuration change for the life of the system, or more specifically as long as interactive services with SecureNet is continued by the user since that is the access vehicle for remote programming into iOtega.
One other negative I’ll note is if you want cellular alarm monitoring this must be chosen from the start rather than added at a later time. DSC has integrated the cellular circuitry onto the main motherboard. Therefore they sell three models of the iOtega: WIFI Internet communication only, WIFI Internet and AT&T cellular, and WIFI Internet and Verizon cellular. This also means if you decide you want to change cellular carriers because of signal/coverage issues later you are locked into the carrier built-in to the motherboard. Also what happens when 3G or 4G technology sunsets in the future? Other security systems such as Honeywell (their Lyric model for example) provide a slot on the side of the main unit where a cellular module can be inserted by an end-user keeping the product future-proof. To be fair this may not be a real negative for most homeowners since DSC went this way to keep the iOtega price affordable, but it’s worth pointing out.Should I buy the DSC iOtega?
If you are looking for a truly affordable professional grade security and home automation system the DSC iOtega is one to look hard at. It’s backed by DSC a long time, trusted security brand, and installation is fast and easy especially with online assistance for remote programming. To be completely upfront however we generally use the Honeywell Lyric wireless system for our own professional installs unless a customer really wants to use a different brand or model we sell and support. The Lyric does cost a little more but it also delivers a lot more and does not have the issues I pointed out earlier with iOtega’s local programming or cellular options.
Regardless its hard to go wrong purchasing the iOtega. Everybody has their own protection and automation needs and of course price point. As far as pro-grade wireless systems today, the DSC iOtega is the least expensive. Consider starting with a prepackaged kit from DSC as well. They come with three door/window sensors and a motion detector. Definiteiy a money-saver!

Adding “Cellular” To My Existing Alarm System

More and more of our long-time customers are moving away from traditional phone line (POTS) based communication to our alarm monitoring central station to cellular based signalling. Is it difficult to do myself, and is it expensive? Read on as I explain the basics and how to tackle this inexpensively and relatively easily.
What Is Cellular Based Alarm Monitoring
The majority of existing alarm systems out there are hardwired based systems which have a built-in POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) alarm communicator. A hardwired alarm system means there is a control panel, which is housed in a metal enclosure hidden out of sight, usually in a closet, basement, or garage. The keypad on the wall which you interactive with the system to arm and disarm is just that, merely a keypad. The door, window, motion detectors, smoke detectors, etc. all run back to this control panel via wire cabling.
Land lines in homes are rapidly disappearing because of the high cost to maintain a phone line when frankly everyone in the home has a cell phone in their pocket. For many alarm owners they have kept this obsolete communication medium in their home just for their alarm system. Eliminating the POTS line and switching to celluar monitoring is actually a monthly savings, and increases security.
Phone lines are always at risk of being cut by an intruder before they attempt to break-in to your home. Phone lines also have the added risk of being disabled by weather events such as a down tree taking down the line to your home during a storm or snow blizzard.Cellular of course has no wires to be cut and is generally powered by your alarm panel which has a backup battery in case of power failure. The increased monthly cost for cellular alarm monitoring compared to POTS is relatively small depending on alarm company. Brinks and ADT will charge probably the most but online monitoring companies such as SafeHomeCentral only charge $16.95 per month with true UL central station dispatch, not a self-monitoring plan that requires the homeowner to call the police. Pretty sure your land line costs at least 3X that amount per month. Most users save roughly $400 annually just switching to cellular alarm monitoring and ditching their land line. And homeowner insurance carriers love cellular alarm monitoring. Be sure to check what annual premium discount they offer. Most grant a 10%-20% savings. What Is Needed To Switch To Cellular Alarm Monitoring
In order for your alarm system to communicate with a central station via cellular it must have a cellular communicator either built-in, or added on as an external hardware option.
Most professional-grade “wireless” systems on the market today have optional plugin modules for cellular service. You just pick what carrier (generally either AT&T or Verizon) and slide the card in.
For hardwired systems (the traditional hidden control panel) you simply connect a small add-on cellular communicator to your existing system which replaces the phone line. In fact, your alarm system will still think it has a phone line connected. The new communicator will provide the alarm panel with a dial tone so it can still “dial” the central station. In reality the communicator is reading the alarm signals to be sent (what type of alarm and zone) and transmitting this data to a third party interactive services provider that accepts both cellular and Internet based alarm communications which relays this information almost instantaneously to the central station for alarm dispatch as appropriate.
The add-on cellular communicator is made to work with a particular interactive service provider such as Honeywell AlarmNet, Alula, or Alarm.com. What’s nice is not only can you send alarm signals to your central station wirelessly there is usually the option to be able to remote control your alarm system with a mobile app from anywhere you have WIFI or cellular service on your smartphone. What an upgrade!
Installing is pretty simple as long as you have basic hands-on skills meaning you can attach four to six wires to your alarm panel and mount the unit on the wall next to the control panel. Alula Connect+ DIY Home Security and Automation System Review – 2019
While Alula is a new name on the professional security market it results from the merger of two major brands, ipDataTel and Resolution Products at the end of 2017. Their latest wireless security offering for 2018, Alula Connect+ is an upgraded version of Resolution’s Helix security system released in 2016. Connect+ however is UL approved for both home and commercial security applications which makes it very attractive for security dealers. While it is marketed for professional installation, it is available from select dealers for DIY use as well. The focus of this review will be for DIY homeowners who demand pro-grade equipment but want to save money by installing themselves.
First let me say that Connect+ is different from other wireless systems on the market because it was designed from the start to be controlled by smartphones and tablets. That doesnt mean you can’t also use traditional keypads on the wall, they have multiple styles, its just that you don’t need to invest in one (or more) if not needed. Because the panel does not have a keypad built-in it becomes easy to install the Connect+ panel anywhere in the home where you have access to the Internet (Ethernet or optional WIFI) as well as 120VAC for power. Many people locate the controller by their entertainment center or by their office desk since network and power is generally there. No longer is there a search for a spot on the wall that is near an AC outlet to fish a power line!The controller comes with a backup battery, siren, and has an onboard Ethernet connector for access to the Internet if using alarm monitoring and remote access to your system. You can add a snap-in WIFI board too if you’re not near your router.

A single Glassbreak sensor can in most cases cover an entire room of windows such as a Family Room even with the drapes closed. Interior Only Home Security Configuration
An “Interior Only” system is the least expensive of the three configurations by far, yet still provides a reasonable level of protection. In this configuration you protect all doors on the ground floor(s) and use PIR motion detectors to cover the exposed window entries. If you are only going to set (arm) the security system when you go to bed or when no one is home then this system configuration may be adequate. However if you will be setting the security system at any time of the day or night (such as 7:30pm) then obviously you can not arm the motion sensors. Understanding DIY Home Security Systems – Part 1

But there ARE paths to tackle those concerns reliably. The real issue however is not where to get the equipment but what equipment do I need and why? Understanding DIY home security system basics is the first step. If you are a home security installation newbie then this series of articles are for you!
Home security (alarm) systems are slowly moving to easier programming, 100% wireless devices, and of course smartphone control, from anywhere. Add Z-Wave control and now you can control not only your security system but lights, thermostats, and door locks. Add IP Video and you have a compelling reason to install a system or upgrade your existing traditional alarm system. Of course installing everything yourself will save you a bundle and provide confidence your family is firmly protected. With the average security system in use for 15 or more years (or until you move) the cost of monthly central station monitoring can add up as well, especially when using a local security dealer. But where to start?
There are six primary questions in the DIY home security system design process that must be answered before jumping ahead and ordering any equipment. Let’s take a quick “Self-Exam”:

What are you trying to protect?
Are you protecting people, property or both? Keep in mind homeowner’s insurance will replace most of your belongings with the obvious exception of family heirlooms or other personal keepsakes. We recommend using a home security systems to protect your family (people) versus property. As mentioned, insurance will cover, for the most part, all personal property.- How much time and money is budgeted for this project?
Will this be a wired system, wireless or combination of both (hybrid)? Wired systems are by far the least expensive equipment-wise but significantly more labor intensive. Wireless on the other hand is fairly quick to install but the equipment cost can be higher. Since “time is money” make sure you weigh both options carefully. Regardless of which direction you go, doing it yourself will save you hundreds of dollars upfront and annually if you choose an online UL central station monitoring partner. -
When will you be arming (activating) the alarm system?
Will you or your family be setting the alarm just when you go to bed, when everyone leaves for work/school, or at anytime of the day or night while the home is still occupied? This answer is important since it drives how many and what type of detection sensors are necessary. Focus on protecting people. At night you need to know if a stranger is roaming your home and bedrooms while you sleep. In the daytime what happens if your wife or child comes home unexpectedly and “surprises” someone who is already in the home?-
Do you have pets in the home and what type?
Cats, dogs, birds? Where do they sleep at night and do they have free roam of the house, night and day? This will determine what type of interior security sensors you will use. Standard PIR motion detectors can only be used in areas that will not contain cats or dogs. However Honeywell and others offer special motion sensors that are “pet immune” up to 80 lbs. As an alternative to motion detectors interior “Acoustic” Glassbreak sensors are also available, and many times used in conjunction with motion detectors.
SPECIAL NOTE!
Manufacturers have had pet immune motion detectors on the market for years and have made progress making them more reliable. We however have never felt completely comfortable recommending them to our company installed customers, especially Central Station monitored customers. Pet immune motion detectors are good at ignoring mid-sized and smaller pets but are not fool-proof. Even one false alarms a year is not acceptable. A standard motion sensor turned upside down or lens masked works better and provides less headaches down the road (more install tricks later). You never want to lose faith in your security system!

Who will be using (arming and disarming) the system normally?
Yourself, wife, kids, housekeeper, a babysitter? All security panels offer multiple “passcodes” allowing every family member to have their own unique arm/disarm code. While most customers use just a single primary passcode, we do however recommend programming a babysitter code. This special passcode can arm the system, but the system can only be disarmed with this code when the babysitter code was used to arm. Your normal passcode(s) can always disarm the system however regardless of what passcode was used to activate the security system. For example, you have a babysitter watch your kids while you’re out on the town with your wife. The babysitter can arm and disarm the system while you’re gone, but once you arm the system with “your” passcode, the babysitter code can no longer be used to disarm the system. You may want to consider using wireless keyfobs for added convenience and simplicity. No passcodes to key in and no need to give an outsider a passcode.

Will this be a “local” alarm or central station monitored alarm?
A local alarm means you will have an outside (hopefully) siren and will be depending upon your neighbors to call the police. How many times have you heard an alarm siren in your neighborhood (home or car alarm)? Did you call the police? An outside siren is still a good deterrent since anyone inside now knows an intruder is around, and neighbors may at least look out their window to see what’s going on. Unfortunately your back door for example could remain “open” all day if the intruder took off running which is just an invitation to another thief. A Central Station Monitored alarm system will notify your local police and/or fire department of alarms in addition to calling your cell phone, pager, etc. to let you know something important is happening at home.
As far as fire protection is concerned (smoke detectors and/or heat sensors, CO detectors) central station monitoring is a must! Don’t forget the safety of pets while the family is out and the home is filling with lethal smoke or gas. Also consider whether you we be using a standard telephone line (POTS), broadband Internet or cellular (GSM/CDMA) connectivity to contact the central station.
Cellular provides increased security since the line cannot be “cut” by an intruder before entering. The most popular communication method today is broadband Internet with cellular backup. IP communication with the central station over the Internet is lower cost. But what happens when you have a power failure? Is your broadband Internet router and switches on battery backup? Generally the cellular unit (communicator) is connected directly to your alarm panel which has its own battery backup in the event of a power failure. Having both Internet and cellular paths to the central station is best and typical with a professionally installed system.

Traditional hardwired systems such as the Honeywell Vista-20P, have a control panel which contains the intelligence of the security system, hidden somewhere out of sight, usually in a closet or basement. Of course having central station monitoring is critical since without it the panel smash risk has not been removed! Landline connection to a central station is fine for normal alarm signalling, but is not APL supported and requires a backup communication path such as Internet or cellular. Only the Honeywell LYNX Touch L5210 still supports landline communication. Also Self-Monitoring which could include Honeywell AlarmNet with Total Connect 2.0 for remote arming/disarm and Z-Wave control for example, will not however remove the panel smash risk. APL was designed for central station dispatch use.
To summarize, APL is used to eliminate panel smash risk and is only supported on the following panels using interactive service (Honeywell AlarmNet) and UL Central Station monitoring:
SecureNet Interactive Services also features their version of APL called Smash and Grab. It works basically the same as Honeywell’s APL and is used for alarm systems (both wired and wireless) that utilize SecureNet for interactive services via IP Internet or cellular.
