If you have an existing 2GIG hardwired or wireless security system you are part of a growing population of alarm system owners in the US.  There are millions of working 2GIG panels maintained by authorized security dealers throughout North America and farther.  These are rock solid systems and known to last with few problems for many years.  We began selling 2GIG hardware in 2008 when they were first released on the market.  We still have customers running their original equipment though many have upgraded to a more modern system such as the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 which is compatible with existing 2GIG and Honeywell 345Mhz wireless sensors making an upgrade DIY easy.

What Alarm Panel Do You Own?

Determine Your 2GIG Alarm System Model

2GIG markets their control panels and systems under various names.  Most dealers (like us) sell the traditional, generic 2GIG branded versions.  By generic we mean that ANY authorized 2GIG dealer and central station can monitor the system.  Others are private labeled and may be locked down so a customer move to a lower cost dealer is difficult or costly.  Brinks for example private labels many 2GIG hardwired and wireless panels.

The first step in getting started with 2GIG alarm monitoring is understanding the model alarm panel and firmware version you own. Take a look at the keypad pictures below as a start. Wireless all-in-one systems such as 2GIG have the “brains” integrated into the primary keypad.  You can identify the model by the keypad/controller pics below.

The 2GIG Rely wireless system (below) is a 3G only panel and can no longer be reactivated with a new dealer since this panel has been discontinued with no 4G LTE cellular options.  Consider the Qolsys IQ Panel 4 as a great upgrade option and reuse all of your existing 2GIG wireless sensors.

Installer Code

You will need to know your panel’s Installer Code because without it dealers may have difficulty signing you up for new monitoring service.  This code is used to get into the programming fields necessary to modify the Alarm.com and central station configuration.  In many cases we can remotely program the panel for service setup but we’ll need the Installer Code to perform any troubleshooting.

The default Installer Code for 2GIG panels is 1561.

Some dealers change the default Installer Code for the sole purpose of making it difficult or impossible to change monitoring dealers.  Contact your previous dealer for your current Installer Code.  If they are monitoring your panel they know this code!

LTE Cellular Communicator

If using an existing cellular communicator with our central station only 4G or 5G LTE cellular models can be registered with carriers today.  Existing Verizon 3G (CDMA) or AT&T 3G (GSM) communicators can no longer be reregistered with cellular carriers.  If currently activated these older communicators will continue to work until the 3G networks begin their shutdown in 2022 but they cannot be reregistered with a new security dealer after June 2019.  Once deactivated even the original dealer cannot reactivate a 3G communicator.

2GIG GC2 Wireless Security System

2GIG GC2/GC2e (Wireless Panel)

Consider the 2GIG-LTEA-A-GC2 (ATT) or 2GIG-LTEV1-A-GC2 Alarm.com LTE cellular communicators for the 2GIG GC2 or GC2e models.

These LTE cards are fully compatible with Alarm.com interactive (remote control) services.  Your panel’s firmware version must be V1.19.1 or higher to use an LTE Alarm.com card in a 2GIG GC2 wireless panel. To check your firmware version follow these simple steps on the page link.

There are two ways to upgrade your GC2 firmware.  The easiest is to have your current alarm dealer request Alarm.com to “push” the update to your panel.  This method only works if you have current service with Alarm.com.

The other method is to flash the panel’s firmware yourself using an Updater cable and 2GIG GC2 firmware files available on our site here.  Unless comfortable setting up comm ports on a PC we do not recommend flashing the firmware DIY.

2GIG GC3 Wireless Security System

2GIG GC3/GC3e (Wireless Panel)

Consider the 2GIG-LTEA-A-GC3 (ATT) or 2GIG-LTEV1-A-GC3 Alarm.com LTE cellular communicators for the 2GIG GC2 or GC2e models.

These LTE cards are fully compatible with Alarm.com interactive (remote control) services.  Your panel’s firmware version must be V3.1.3 or higher to use an LTE Alarm.com card in a 2GIG GC3 wireless panel. To check your firmware version follow these simple steps on the page link.

There are two ways to upgrade your GC3 firmware.  The easiest is to have your current alarm dealer request Alarm.com to “push” the update to your panel.  This method only works if you have current service with Alarm.com.

The other method is to flash the panel’s firmware yourself using a USB memory stick and 2GIG GC3 firmware files available on our site here.

I have an older 2GIG GC-2 system that I had monitored through Brinks which was costing me a small fortune. I didn’t realize that 3G cell cards needed to be replaced with 4G cards because Brinks never got around to telling me about the upcoming need for change. Before cancelling with Brinks Tim at SHC told me to have Brinks update my panel’s firmware remotely to V19 before terminating service otherwise I’d have to buy a special cable and do the panel update myself which I’m told is not DIY friendly. The 4G cell cards won’t work with the GC-2 unless the firmware is at V19 it seems.

Brinks did the update as requested then I made the switch to SHC cutting my bill in half. The change was easy and fast and their tech support is great. Wish I had moved sooner but just didnt know there was this kind of savings out there.

My brother used SafeHomeCentral so once my contract expired I flipped my 2GIG GC3 over to these people as well. Did this on a Sunday surprised they were open and had techs available to walk me through the process. Frankly it was pretty easy but be sure your IMEI number is already unregistered with Alarm.com before attempting the switch. My last dealer unregistered my cell card already so I had zero issues but read a lot online about this possible hitch.

  3. Yeli J. says:

Be sure your 2GIG GC2 has a firmware revision of 1.19.3. I stopped service with my dealer in the Fall and when trying to restart service with a less expensive dealer everyone told me I needed a 4G LTE cellular card and a firmware update to use the card. My previous dealer could have pushed the firmware update to my GC2 through Alarm.com but since I stopped service before updating no dealer, including my last, could reactivate my 3G cellular card for the push. I bought a 2GIG updater cable on Amazon and used the firmware update files found on this site and just did it myself. The techs here helped me over the phone with the update which was most appreciated. So glad I found these people. Cut my alarm monitoring cost in half. Was also able to get a monitoring certificate for my insurance company same day I went active rather than ask over and over again with my previous alarm dealer.

  4. Don L. says:

I made the switch from Brinks who was charging $51 every month for the same thing these people are charging less than $20. The only complication was the need to get an LTE cellular module which Brinks “forgot” to tell me would soon be deactivated by Verizon since all of the carriers are ditching 3G service. I bought my new LTE radio on Amazon and Safehomecentral was very helpful guiding me through popping it in my 2GIG panel. I had to “push” Brinks to update my panel’s firmware remotely so the LTE card would be recognized but they did and as soon as I had the LTE card installed I made the switch. What a difference in price and customer service!

  5. Larry D. says:

I moved my GC3 over to SafeHomeCentral when my local guy raised his prices again! Looked online and found I could get more features and pay almost half. Turned my neighbor onto these people as well. Easy to work with tech people (Thanks Chris!)
